Abena Essah is a poet, musician, actor and creative of many hats based in London. Their practice often explores the intersections of their queer identity, Ghanaian heritage; navigating relationships and love and reimagining/decolonising the lens with which black history is told.
Abena Essah has been published by Spread the Word with Ink Sweat and Tears, South London Gallery and Marques Almeida for London Fashion Week 2020. They have performed their music and poetry at several venues such as Brixton Studio, the Southbank Centre with Outspoken Live, and the Brainchild Festival.
They are a BBC Words First finalist, a Roundhouse Poetry Slam finalist and a Some-Antics Slam Champion. They are also an alumnus of the Obsidian Foundation and The Writing Room and the Roundhouse Poetry Collective. Currently, Abena Essah is a Barbican Young Poet and a Roundhouse Resident Artist and they are working on their debut EP as well as their debut theatre show, Sankofa: Before The Whitewash which will premiere at Roundhouse’s Last Word Festival on June 15th 2022.
